Masking Tapes
Quality workmanship
speaks for itself, but even the best professionals are
only as good as the materials they use. When you want
your work to say quality, rely on 3M masking tapes.
Choosing the right masking tape gives
you professional results every time. Not all masking
tapes are compatible with all surfaces or coatings.
Masking tape may peel paint, cause adhesive transfer
or other damage if improperly used. Masking tapes increase
adhesive bond over a period of time (usally within 24
hours). In addition to time, environmental factors,
such as temperature, humidity and light, greatly affect
the preformance of masking tape. Therefore, always test
masking tapes in a inconspicusour area before using.
It is the user's responsiblity to determine compatibility
of masking tape to: 1) the surface being masked, 2)
the coating being applied, 3) environmental influencel.
A word about adhesion: Adhesion is often confused with
how sticky or tacky a masking tape feels. This tacky
feeling is produced by how the adhesive was formulated
or cured, which does not neccessarily mean more bond.
Adhesion refers to the bond created between the masking
tape and the surface it is applied to. The higher the
adhesion, the higher the bond. When selecting a masking
tape, we suggest you start with the adhesion level best
suited for the surface being masked. You want high adhesion
(higher bond) on hard to adhere to surfaces, such as:
rough wood, concrete, masonry, thick carpet, some vinyl
(vinyl cover moulding or commercial vinyl wallcovering),
enamel coating and
cold or dirty surfaces. You want medium adhesion (medium
bond) on easy to adhere to surfaces, such as: glass,
painted wallboard, ceramics, metal, smooth wood, latex
coatings and warm surfaces. You want low adhesion (low
bond) on delicate or fragile surfaces, such as: wallpaper,
new wallboard (unprimed or primed) and coating which
aren't fully cured. Adhesion will increase over a short
period of time (usally 24 hours) and continue to build
thereafter.
